I have traveled to Hudson Bay to photograph polar bears three times. Twice I rode the tundra buggies which provided a unique opportunity to see the bears as they wait for the ice to freeze on Hudson Bay. Once, I spent several days at a remote lodge on the shores of Hudson Bay. Seal River lodge provided a unique opportunity to experience the bears at eye level and without barriers.
The bears spend the winter on the ice where they eat the seals.
In addition to the bears, we saw arctic fox, snowy owls and ptarmigan.
My favorite experience is to observe and photograph bears as they spar with each other. While it appears to be a fight, it is more a training behavior as they get physically ready to venture out onto the ice.
